What to Expect During and After Treatment

Each Kybella session takes approximately 20 minutes. Dr. Erdman maps the injection sites on your chin, applies a topical numbing agent, and administers a series of small injections across the treatment area. Most patients describe a mild burning or stinging sensation during the injections that resolves quickly.

The part most providers underexplain: swelling after Kybella is significant and predictable. The area under your chin will swell noticeably — often described as a "bullfrog" appearance — beginning within hours of treatment and peaking around days two through four. For most patients, visible swelling resolves within one to two weeks, though some mild firmness in the tissue can persist longer as the body continues clearing treated cells. Plan your treatment accordingly. If you have a wedding, a reunion, or a professional event within two weeks of your appointment, schedule around it.

Numbness, tenderness, and mild bruising in the treatment area are also common and temporary.

How Many Sessions Will You Need

Most patients require two to four Kybella sessions to reach their goal, spaced at least four to six weeks apart. The number depends on the volume of submental fat present and the degree of definition you want to achieve. Some patients with modest fullness see the result they want after two sessions. Others with more significant volume need three or four.

Each session is evaluated individually. Dr. Erdman reviews your response before recommending the next round — she is not working from a preset package.
