One platform, five clinical jobs — performed by a physician who selects your settings based on your skin, not a protocol sheet.
Why Most Patients Don't Know Which Laser to Ask For
That's not a knowledge gap — it's a sign the industry hasn't explained itself clearly. Patients search for results: "get rid of my sun spots," "stop shaving," "clear up the redness on my nose." The laser is the tool, not the goal. At Ageless Beauty Doctors, we start with your concern and work backward to the right wavelength, the right settings, and a realistic session count — before you commit to anything.
We use the Alma Harmony platform, a multi-application laser and light system that handles hair removal, skin resurfacing, vascular lesions, pigmentation, and tattoo removal through distinct, clinically validated modes. One device. Five different jobs. And every treatment is performed by Dr. Valerie Erdman, DO — not delegated to a technician.
Five Concerns, Five Dedicated Treatments
Each laser treatment below targets a specific problem. Click through to the page that matches what you're trying to fix — each one covers how the treatment works, what to expect, how many sessions are typical, and whether your skin tone is a good fit.
- Unwanted hair: Permanent reduction through targeted follicle damage, with settings adjusted for your skin tone and hair color. Learn more about laser hair removal.
- Fine lines, texture, and overall skin quality: ClearLift, a non-ablative resurfacing mode on the Alma Harmony, rebuilds collagen without surface damage or downtime. Learn more about laser skin resurfacing.
- Brown spots, sun damage, and melasma: Light energy breaks down excess pigment in the upper layers of skin. Learn more about hyperpigmentation and sun damage treatment.
- Redness, rosacea, and visible facial vessels: The VascuPen handpiece targets broken capillaries and diffuse redness without affecting surrounding tissue. Learn more about rosacea and facial vein treatment.
- Unwanted tattoos: Laser energy fragments ink particles so your immune system can clear them. Learn more about laser tattoo removal.
Is Laser Safe for Darker Skin Tones?
This is the most common laser question we hear, and it deserves a direct answer. Some laser systems carry real risk for medium to deep skin tones — specifically, wavelengths that can't distinguish between the melanin in a target lesion and the melanin in the surrounding skin. That risk is real, and any provider who dismisses it is not being honest with you.
The Alma Harmony platform includes settings designed for a range of Fitzpatrick skin types. What makes the difference is not just the device — it's who's selecting the parameters. Dr. Erdman reviews your skin tone, your treatment history, and your goal before any settings are confirmed. If a particular treatment is not the right fit for your skin, she will tell you that directly and explain what alternatives exist. No guessing. No "let's try it and see."
What to Know About Timing Before You Book
Most laser treatments — particularly hair removal, resurfacing, and pigmentation work — are best started in fall or winter. The clinical reason is straightforward: treated skin is temporarily more photosensitive, and sun exposure in the weeks following a session can cause unwanted pigment changes or reduce your results. Starting in October or November means your skin is protected during the recovery window and you're seeing results by spring.
If you're reading this in the warmer months, that doesn't mean you've missed your window. Some treatments are appropriate year-round with the right precautions, and a consultation will give you a clear picture of what's realistic for your timeline. What we won't do is start a series without telling you exactly how many sessions to expect, what the intervals are, and what you'll need to do between appointments.
A Physician Runs the Laser — That's Not the Standard at Most Clinics
At the majority of med spas in the Cleveland area, laser treatments are performed by licensed aestheticians or medical assistants working under a physician's name on paper. At Ageless Beauty Doctors, Dr. Erdman performs the treatments herself. That distinction matters for two reasons: settings selection and accountability.
Laser parameters — energy level, pulse duration, spot size, cooling — are clinical decisions. Getting them wrong on a patient with a history of melasma, a recent tan, or a darker Fitzpatrick type can cause burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Having a physician in the room making those calls in real time, not a protocol chart made for an average patient, is a meaningful safety difference. It's also why patients who've had a poor experience elsewhere often find their way to us.
What Happens Before Your First Laser Session
Every laser patient starts with a consultation. If you're uncertain which treatment applies to your concern, that conversation is where we figure it out together. For patients who want a data-driven baseline, the Alma IQ skin analysis uses multi-spectral imaging to measure pigmentation, redness, texture, and sun damage before any treatment begins — and tracks change over time so results aren't just subjective.
From there, you'll receive a clear treatment plan: which laser mode, how many sessions, what the intervals look like, and what to expect at each stage. You'll know the full picture before you book your first appointment.
Questions About Laser Treatments
How do I know which laser treatment is right for my concern?
You don't need to know before you come in. During your consultation, Dr. Erdman will review your concern, your skin tone, your history, and your goal. If an Alma IQ scan is useful, we'll use it to get objective data before making any recommendations. You'll leave with a specific plan, not a general suggestion. How many laser sessions will I need?
It depends on the treatment and the target. Laser hair removal typically requires six to eight sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Pigmentation and resurfacing treatments often show meaningful change in three to five sessions. Tattoo removal varies significantly based on ink color, depth, and age of the tattoo. We give you a session estimate before you start — not after. Is there downtime after laser treatments?
Most treatments on the Alma Harmony platform involve minimal downtime. ClearLift resurfacing is a non-ablative treatment, meaning the surface of the skin is not disrupted — most patients return to normal activity the same day. Vascular and pigmentation treatments may cause temporary redness or darkening of the treated area for a few days. We review what to expect for each specific treatment during your consultation. Can I get laser treatments if I have a tan?
Active tan — including spray tan — is a contraindication for most laser treatments. Tanned skin has elevated surface melanin, which increases the risk of burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. We ask patients to avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least four weeks before a session. This is one of the reasons fall and winter are the preferred seasons to start a laser series.Where are your laser treatments available?
